Frequently asked questions

What is vegetable-tanned leather?

While most leather used today is tanned using chromium, I work exclusively with high-quality vegetable-tanned leather, a material that has been crafted using natural tannins from bark and plants for centuries. It is valued for its durability, natural character, and the rich patina it develops over time.

Why choose handmade leather goods?

In a world of mass production, I believe in making things slowly and with purpose. Every piece is cut, stitched, and finished by hand in my workshop. No two items are exactly alike, and each one is made to be used, appreciated, and kept for years to come.

Where are Old Dutch Leatherworks products made?

Every Old Dutch Leatherworks piece is handcrafted by me in my workshop in the  beautiful town Winsum, the Netherlands. I combine traditional leatherworking techniques with carefully selected materials to create timeless goods that are built to last.

What kind of products do you make?

I make handcrafted wallets, card holders, belts, keychains, knife sheaths, and other leather accessories. I also enjoy taking on bespoke projects and creating one-of-a-kind pieces.

Do you offer custom leather work?

Yes. Custom work is an important part of my craft. If you have an idea for a special piece, I would be happy to discuss the possibilities and create something made specifically for you.

Can I personalise my order?

Selected products can be personalised with initials, a name, or a custom stamp. A personalised leather item makes a meaningful gift and often becomes even more treasured with age.

How long will a handmade leather product last?

A well-made leather product can last for decades when properly cared for. I make my goods with longevity in mind, creating pieces that can accompany you through life and perhaps even be passed on to the next generation.

How should I care for my leather product?

Leather is a natural material and benefits from occasional care. Keep it away from excessive moisture and direct heat, and apply a quality leather balm from time to time. With proper care, your leather goods will age beautifully.

Does leather develop a patina?

Yes, and that is one of the things I love most about vegetable-tanned leather. Through daily use, sunlight, and touch, the leather develops a unique patina that reflects the life of its owner. No two pieces will ever age in exactly the same way.

Do you ship internationally?

Yes. I proudly ship my handcrafted leather goods worldwide. Shipping costs and delivery times vary depending on the destination and are calculated during checkout.

Are handmade leather products sustainable?

Yes. Vegetable-tanned leather is widely regarded as one of the more sustainable materials for making long-lasting goods. Leather is a by-product of the food industry, meaning that the hides already exist as part of the food chain. If they were not used, much of this material would be sent to landfill or destroyed through incineration, while alternative products would need to be manufactured from other, often less sustainable, materials.

Another important aspect of sustainability is longevity. Vegetable-tanned leather is incredibly durable and can last for decades with proper care. It can be maintained, repaired, and in many cases restored rather than replaced. At the end of its useful life, it can also be recycled and is biodegradable due to the use of natural tannins in the tanning process.

I believe that making products that last, can be repaired, and age beautifully is one of the most sustainable choices we can make.
